now first of all, let's get all of the basic nonsense out of the way. first and foremost, his playby must be darren criss. i will go down with this ship, and i have been hardcore shipping for a while now. his age should be somewhere between 20 and 23 and he should be little ava's opposite - really carefree, goes with the flow, does things spontaneously, never really has a definite plan, and all of that. whereas ava is all about order and things going a certain way, darren (as we'll call him for now) is the opposite. whatever happens just happens. he lives in the moment. and in the end, them being complete opposites is what makes them fall in love. those are the only real requirements.
now if you read ava's app, you'll notice that she mentions a little someone special who took her to all these little underground coffeeshops. that is darren - her opposite, her knight, her rock. how did they meet? they went to high school together (whether they were in the same grade or he was a few years older than her is up to his age). the time they did know each other in high school, they didn't get along. she was a cheerleader, an honor roll student who went to every sporting event, served on student council all four years, graduated in the top ten, and was generally just very uptight about her schedules. and he was a theater geek, a band nerd, a choir freak, a guy who lived in the moment and went to football games only if they allowed him to wear body paint and go crazy. he was always very disorganized and just...crazy. her opposite. they never crossed paths, never spoke, and so they never got along.
then came college. she was always ahead in her studies so no matter what age you make him, we can guarantee they had at least one course together. unknowingly, they both started to pursue the same major - and here you have a choice. i'm thinking that can be either pediatric medicine, psychology, education (him probably as an art or music focus and her history), or ultrasound technology or radiology. i just see these as possibles for two very different people to succeed at in different ways. anyway, they both decide to pursue the same career, end up with a course together, and when she starts struggling for the first time ever in a course, she finds out that he's actually succeeding. she asks him for help and...well, long story short, the end of that study session was them kissing and her leaving when she realized what was happening.
this is where we're picking up now - they still hang out. he's still helping her in school. basically, he takes her out on little dates but they aren't officially dating. she won't hold his hand, won't kiss him, none of that. they aren't dating, so she doesn't see why she should. but they hang out all the time and are always very sweet on one another. he is her breath of fresh air. she's been so uptight for so long, that having someone so carefree to help her let go and live her life is exciting and romantic. and she's a source of stability for him - someone who reminds him to do his work, to finish projects, to sleep, to do laundry, to make all his appointments. eventually, they ease their way into a relationship but for now, they're just friends who are more than friends but not quite dating.
